canaries around the globe are making a difference

Inspiration leads to action! That's why we have created a home to highlight like-minded CANARIES around the world who are doing something, anything they can to combat climate change. You don’t have to be a world-class scientist, an elected official or a CEO to wield power and influence (but if you are, we clearly welcome you too!).

description:

A Distinguished University Professor in the School of Earth Sciences and a Senior Research Scientist in the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University. His research has propelled the field of ice core paleoclimatology out of the Polar Regions to the highest tropical and subtropical ice fields. He and the OSU team have developed lightweight solar-powered drilling equipment for the acquisition of histories from ice fields in the tropical South American Andes, the Himalayas, and on Kilimanjaro. These paleoclimate histories have advanced our understanding of the coupled nature of Earth’s climate system. Special emphasis has been placed on the El Niño and monsoon systems that dominate the climate of the tropical Pacific and affect global-scale oceanic and atmospheric circulation patterns. His observations of glacier retreat over the last three decades confirm that glaciers around the world are melting and provide clear evidence that the warming of the last 50 years is now outside the range of climate variability for several millennia, if not longer. Beyond research, Lonnie is now accepting more opportunities to use his voice to speak to audiences around the world. Featured in CANARY his mission has shifted into engaging people around the world with his inspiring story and message of hope for humanity and the world as we know it.

How you are participating:

Data is essential in helping us forward our understanding of the world and how it works. While scientists tend to need to stay objective when you have incredible insight that perhaps the world at large is not seeing, you have an obligation to do what you can to get the message out there. “With great knowledge, comes great responsibility”

I made a conscious effort to use my professional skills to do something about climate change... I am proud to have been one of the producers of the film CANARY.

How you are participating:

Making a film is not an easy endeavor, and as much as people might pay lip service to their commitment to climate change, we found over and over again that people in the industry would not get behind a film about climate change. (Describe in more detail in Video)

I made a conscious effort to use my professional skillset (what I do for work) to do something about climate change... I am proud to have been one of the producers of the film CANARY, which we hope, via Lonnie's incredible life story will inspire more people to do the seemingly impossible!

How you are participating:

Making a film of any kind is not an easy endeavor, and as much as it seems like the industry (Hollywood) is fully onboard to doing anything we can about climate change, we found over and over again that people in positions of power to help felt disillusioned, disinterested or did not think audiences care enough to warrant their support. What I learned is not everyone is up for every fight, and that's fine. It is important to source and partner with people who genuinely care about the underlying issue or issues you care about (or our film is about) to make it happen. In the global effort to combat climate change, it seems no different. Making a film is one of the greatest exercises in collaboration I have had the luxury of being a part of. The bigger fight seems like the same mentality, but on a slightly bigger scale.

I am a sociologist. I work in a Maasai community next to the Tanzania border. For more than ten years, the climate change effect started to be seen. My approach is meeting with the community. I spread awareness on reducing tree destruction, fencing our water sources, and planting more trees. I visit with community members on distrusted forest and water sources. I developed an interest after attending workshops on climate change. The reality is that climate change is really a problem for us and it has negative effects on farmers. We now have less rains, and even diseases are increasing.

I am an administrator. I mobilize the meetings. I have a little knowledge on climate change, so we focus on tree planting, water resource management, managing pastures, organizing grazing, preventing forest destruction, and encouraging all groups to participate in the activities.

How you are participating:

Climate change is a reality. We have seen the negative effects. As I have seen the weather changing and a lot of effects. I see livestock and agriculture as our livelihoods and they are t risk. I usually teach the community to understand climate change by showing them how, during a certain period of time usually there is rains but it has changed and also in the community farmers are losing livestock due to too much heat.

Hi, my name is Meryl, and I am passionate about turning the film industry green! Environmentally sustainable filmmaking practices are on the rise, and it's my goal to help push this change forward at the academic level. As a graduate student in the USC School of Cinematic Arts, I figured there's no better place to begin than with the next crop of the best and brightest filmmakers. So, I set out to organize a Sustainable Filmmaking Panel at USC. I brought leaders in the sustainable filmmaking space from HBO, The Academy, and Netflix to speak to USC students from the film school and beyond. Furthermore, I created a 20 minute presentation explaining the basics of sustainable filmmaking, how the film industry is environmentally damaging, and why it is necessary to alter our production practices. The Panel was a success; our speakers brought unique and insightful points of view that helped our audience understand how the major players in the industry are already moving the needle and how important it is for students to join the cause. The first major step in generating change is raising awareness, so, that's what I did with the panel. My next goal is instituting a universal Sustainable Filmmaking course at USC for all production students to take.

How you are participating:

I learned a lot from organizing the Sustainable Filmmaking Panel at USC. I learned that people will be motivated to help if they understand the context behind their actions. I learned that students have immense power when they speak for what's important to them. I learned that there is much more to be done, and that my Panel was only the first step in generating long term change.

description:

My work consists of collecting snow samples in the glaciers of Peru, to estimate the degree of contamination by black carbon particles, a type of aerosol from the burning of forests, the transportation sector and any activity that uses fossil fuels. The results indicate that black carbon deposited in Peru's glaciers increases during the dry season and more dramatically during the EL NIÑO phenomenon. Likewise, glaciers located near densely populated cities are more contaminated by black carbon.

How you are participating:

Through this project I obtained my professional degree in environmental engineering. I obtained privileged knowledge about the presence of black carbon and its impact on Peruvian glaciers. I participated in several expeditions led by Lonnie Thompson, even extracting ice cores from the highest tropical glacier in the world.
